FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Done properly, render should last the life of the building. The key is preparation: walls waterproofed where needed, a sufficient key for the render to adhere, correct expansion and slip joints, and the right painting method. Skip the prep and problems show up early, which is why we never rush it.
Most cracking comes down to movement and missing joints. Correct joints at damp course, flashings and where two substrates overlap are essential. If you don't like the look of joints, they can be caulked and painted so they're barely noticeable.
Every job is different. Access, scaffolding, wall condition and the finish you're after all affect the price. Cement render is very cost-effective for the lift it gives a home, especially older properties. The best way to get an accurate figure is to send us a few details or photos and we'll give you a clear, competitive quote.
You can add oxides to cement render, but the colour range is limited and the result can fade unevenly over time. Some people like that rustic, earthy look. For most jobs, painting after rendering gives a better and longer-lasting colour result.
Yes. Acrylic render has a wide colour range. The wall is rendered and made flat first, then the coloured acrylic render goes over the top for a consistent, hard-wearing finish.
Traditional render can need several weeks to fully cure before painting. With modern render systems and primers, that wait can be much shorter. We'll let you know the right timing for your job and the products used so the paint goes on at the right time.
Yes. There are products designed for rendering over painted surfaces, and when the right system is used the result holds up very well. We'll assess the surface first to make sure it's suitable.
We're happy to advise if you ask, and we're asked often. Colour is personal, though, so the final choice is always yours. We'll guide you rather than decide for you.
Neither is simply better. They suit different situations. Both have pros and cons, and having both options just means more choice for your project. We've got plenty of experience in both systems and will help you pick the right one for your job.
